The hidden half of domestic violence
Going to the Dogs
In a recent poll, people were asked
"What makes your dog happy" Almost 2/3's of
the answers were..."when I come home"
I wonder if this confirms that dogs maybe smarter than many people. After
all, this is what some recent studies seem to be saying. This can even
apply to cats as I recently had one that was a stray which at first would not
let anyone near it, but after time, it would allow us to pet it. As it
learned to trust us, it soon wanted to be petted even more then it wanted food.
When she finally did come into the house, she did not want to leave and she
followed me
everywhere I went (except out the door).
Let's move on to people. Have you ever been to an airport and watched
people as they come off an airplane? Let's go one step further. Have
you watched as someone in uniform returns from a war zone and they get off the
plane and see their loved ones off at a distance. I am sure you noticed them as
they walked ever so slowly, often stopping to get a magazine or a cup of
coffee.....what? You say they did not walk slowly? Of course not.
They ran to each other so
fast we would almost think they were still flying. Often the last few
steps were actually in the air as they leaped into their loved one's arms.
(Of course most often, it is the wives that do the leaping and the husbands that
do the catching but it does give a different meaning to "meet them in the
air"
So we see that dogs (and even cats) love to see their master's return home and
men and women run to loved ones that have been away for a long time. I
have also noticed that this eager anticipation of their master's return when
they are away is not something reserved for just a few months or years for
it lasts as long as the dog is alive.
Could this be why more than half of our marriages end in divorce? Why is
it that our dogs can keep looking forward to our return home for all of their
lives while we as people will take each other for granted after only a year or
two if that long? Would more of our marriages last if we acted more like
dogs? (No I do not mean if we lick our spouses face or smel....opps I guess this
is TMI. [too much information])
For those in marriages that seem so cold and unloving, think back to when you
were first married. What did you do different then that you are doing now?
No, I am not asking what your spouse did differently, I am asking you! Ladies,
do you lay around in a dingy bathrobe, your hair still in curlers when you
husband gets home? When he says I am home, you want to tell him to shut up
because you cannot hear the person you are gosip ¦ahh talking with on the
phone. If so, is there any wonder that your husband may try to kiss the
dog and throw you a bone. Hey guys ¦don't laugh. Does your wife
have trouble telling you from the dog because you are sweaty and hairy because
you did not shave for several days? Why is it that we want to look our
best for people we do not even know but we could care less how we look to those
we should care the most about?
If our pets love to have our attention, don't ya think our spouse would like it
too? Although I doubt our spouse really wants to play fetch with a ball,
often just spending time with them will show we still care. Better yet,
men, do you know that meaningful touch is so important to your wife? By
meaningful touch, I mean to simply hold her, give her a hug, hold hands, a
gentle kiss several times a day without needing to haul her off to bed.
Women, do you realize men need positive affirmation to know that you do care
about them? After all, you need and want to hear "I love you"
often do you not? It is not good enough for you to know your husband loves
you, you need to hear it. While, your husband needs to know you appreciate
him too. Dogs love hearing "good boy" People love hearing, you
did a great job and I appreciate it" or even more important, to hear
"I appreciate "you". Real, genuine praise does wonders to bring a
husband and wife closer to each other.

I think one reason praise helps so much is that it does cost something.
When we give genuine praise to someone, we have to take time to notice what they
are doing. When we praise someone, it affirms that they are worthwhile. Praise
has actually saved lives and given people hope by letting them know someone
cares about them. Look at the glow in a child's face when you praise them!...yet
far too many of our children today do not hear any positive thing said to them
or about them. This is also a reminder that our children need praise too.

This brings up a question for me. This is a question for Christians, those
who proclaim to have a relationship with the LORD. If we do, why do we so
often forget that HE is coming back? Why do we have our roots so firmly
planted in the things of this Earth that we never think about anything else?
When observing the Lord's Supper, do we skip over the part where we are to do
this until the Lord's return? Should that not remind us that HE is coming
back? Now I sure do not want this next sentence to seem sacrilegious
because it certainly is not...but I do not want to keep eating of the Bread and
the Cup....I want to dine at the MARRIAGE SUPPER OF THE LAMB because I (as will
each of you if you have accepted the LORD) will be the guest of honor as I will
be HIS bride! (I guess all brides want time to drag on as the day comes
closer
don't they)
Last week, I saw one of the most beautiful sun rises I have ever seen. The
Sun was behind a cloud and I could see a couple of dozen "fingers" or
bright rays coming out of that cloud. My thoughts went to Acts 1:11 Which
also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same
Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as
ye have seen him go into heaven.
Oh how I long for HIS return....but I also dread it for those who are not ready.
If you are not ready, if you do not look forward to this you can be in just a
few moments...this is how
http://shatterdmen.com/first_step.htm
My friend, more and more I find that there is no way I can look at a sun rise as
above, or a new born baby, or a thunderstorm or any number of other things and
not praise my LORD. It brings life to the hymn George Beverly Shea made
well known....
O Lord my God, When I in awesome wonder
Consider all The works Thy Hand hath made,
I see the stars, I hear the mighty thunder,
Thy power throughout The universe displayed;
When Christ shall come, With shouts of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow In humble adoration
And there proclaim, "My God, how great Thou art!"
My friend, are you looking forward to HIS return? If not, maybe you need to get
to know HIM better. We would love to show you how.
