How to have eternal life

Facing Our Giants

Most of us have heard the story about how David faced the giant
Goliath with just a sling and some stones. We can read about it in 1
Samuel 17

Several months ago, a movie called "Facing the Giants came out in
which a high school football couch and his team had to face some
giants. I do highly recommend each of you to see this movie.

Each of us too have giants we must face. Each of our giants may take
on different characteristics. For some, it may be our health. For
others it may be economic while others face problems of self-doubt
and self-condemnation. Many of us face more then one giant, often
several at a time.

Even ministries have their giants to face. As a ministry we often
face the giants of an unjust legal system and unjust laws and our
members often face giants who wear black robes and sit behind a
bench. However, we need to point out that those persons that are
passing these unjust laws and wearing those robes are not the real
enemy. The real giant we face is simply using them.

In "Facing the Giants" a high school football team faced their giants
on the football field. The couch learned that before they could beat
these giants, each member of the team had to face and defeat their
own individual giants. They too faced self-doubt that they could not
win. One member faced the giant of disrespect for his father.
Another was to small and weak to be on a football team but each of
them were able to face their own giants and then face the ones on the
field.

Verse 45 of 1 Samuel 17 tells us how David faced his giant: "Then
said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and
with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of
the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast
defied"

The question is how can we face OUR giants? After all, sometimes we
cannot even see the ones we face. One of our members signs each post
she makes with...Don't tell GOD how big your storm is; tell your
storm how big your GOD is!

The Bible tells us many times that nothing is impossible for GOD.

Luke 18:27
And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible
with God.

David's giant had all the might and the power. David simply had a
sling and several stones. Human reasoning said there was no way David
should have come out of that battle alive. Many of you also feel you
can never win the battle against the giant you are facing but….Romans
8:31 states: What shall we then say to these things? If God be for
us, who can be against us?
David defeated his giant because he firmly felt that this giant was
defying his GOD. He also fully depended upon his GOD for the victory
against this giant. This same GOD is still in the giant business
today.

In "Facing the Giants" the couch told his team something I have said
often here in this ministry. He told his team that they would praise
the Lord if they won a game…but they would still praise HIM if they
lost the game.

This ministry has faced many giants. We faced one the morning of
April 1st 2007 when Shatteredmen was deleted but what the person that
did this did not count on is that the LORD said "I know thy works:
behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it:
for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not
denied my name" (Revelation 3:8) This verse also gives a few more
means to defeat giants. We have little strength to do it, but God's
strength is made perfect in our weakness. It also tells us that we
need to keep faithful to God's word and to not deny our LORD. This
is confirmed in Matthew 6:33 where it says: "But seek ye first the
kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be
added unto you."

This reminds me of some giants we can face. At times we have heard
people say that they will serve GOD…IF. My friend, what ever
follows that "if" is a giant that needs to be slain for anything that
follows becomes our god and it is therefore an idol. It would be
like that high school couch saying we will praise the LORD…if we win
the games.  Please remember however that if our if is our family or some other person, this does not mean we are to slay "them"...it means we are to place them after our LORD in our list of priorities.

What giant are you facing today my friend? In closing I would
contend that the biggest giant anyone would ever face is the giant
that our works are enough to gain eternal life. In reality, it is
only by trusting Jesus Christ for the full payment for our sin that
will slay this giant.

Whatever your giant, it can be slain by seeking God first, by
praising God regardless of the outcome of our trials and tribulations
and by having faith in God that nothing is impossible for HIM to do.

The Bible tells us David picked up five stones out of the book  to slay his giant.  Our stones are the word of GOD.  Our sling is the Sword of the Spirit  and when used properly it will slay any of our giants.

Hebrews 11:6
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh
to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them
that diligently seek him.
